Jakarta Police have arrested an adult magazine photo model, Novi Amalia, 25, for allegedly hitting seven people while driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs on Thursday evening.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters on Friday that Novi, who was reportedly half-naked, was driving her red Honda Jazz recklessly on Jl Sukarjo Wiryopranoto in Central Jakarta, when she hit a cyclist and a street food vendor at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Popularity and a lot of money that comes from a questionable source will never make a person feel happy inside.

Indonesian society judges a person’s character primarily based on looks, status symbols, titles and social, racial and religious affiliation and often fails to look further. This young woman might be a victim of such labeling.

What is up with this drunk-driving/car-crashing trend in the country?

Anyone caught drunk or on drugs while driving should be banned from driving for life and be incarcerated if they hit others.

This is another example of how desperate and humiliating life is as a pedestrian in Jakarta.

Those pedestrians would not have been hurt if they were standing or walking on a properly built sidewalk.

Indonesians neglect rights of pedestrians for a safe, clean and humane walking space.

Jakarta, under the new management of Jokowi, must immediately address this problem.

Build more sidewalks and dedicated spaces for people, bikes and the disabled. Equally important is to educate motorists as to how to respect the rights of pedestrians and bikers.

Pedestrians have every right to use the road for their daily activities, not only during car-free days.
