UN Security Council meets on North Korean test

The U.N. Security Council has opened an emergency meeting on North Korea's latest nuclear test, and several ambassadors say they expect a strong condemnation as a prelude to further action.

North Korea conducted nuclear weapons tests weeks after rocket launches in 2006 and 2009. The Security Council demanded in legally binding sanctions resolutions adopted soon after each test that Pyongyang halt all nuclear or missile tests.

The council is likely to issue a press statement condemning the latest test.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, asked whether she expected a strong condemnation, said, "We'll do the usual drill."

The council meeting is being presided over by South Korea Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan. South Korea joined the council in January for a 2-year term and holds its rotating presidency.
