Police probe in Sleman halt prison murders

National police chief major general Timur Pradopo said that the police will investigate the murders of Sleman Penitentiary in Sleman, Yogyakarta, stop and hand over the findings to the army research team, who will carry out further research.

"We will hand over all evidence, witness statements and other findings to the army immediately. They will take on the research, "Timur said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

Previously, army research team would head that Brig. Gen. Unggul K Yudhoyono explained that nine out of 11 Kopassus members charged with participating in the attack, which killed four prisoners last week, are sent on military process.

"Based on our findings, the next step of the research will be carried out by the army of the military police corps," said Unggul.

Separately, said Kopassus Commander Maj. Gen. Agus Sutomo the process will take place in Central Java and would be open to the public.

"Everyone will be able to access to justice. The open process is our answer to that question whether the army can be impartial if you try his own soldiers, "he said.

When asked about the killings, Agus said as the highest ranked officer in Kopassus, he was ready to take responsibility, but did not elaborate further on what that responsibility was.

Yesterday, army research team head Brig. Gen. Unggul K Yudhoyono announced that 11 Kopassus members were involved in the murder. He said the team had identified a soldier-known as you-if the executioner, supported by eight members, with two others that the group to the site to prevent this attack on the prison had followed.
