ProFauna Indonesia from environmentalists staged a protest in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday, urges the Aceh and North Sumatra Governments the destruction of natural habitats of the orang-utan.

Rosek Nursahid ProFauna Indonesia President said the habitat of orangutans continued to sink as a result of ongoing deforestation in North Sumatra and Aceh.

He said there were only 6,000 Sumatran orangutans left in their natural habitat. The largest concentration of Sumatran orangutan was found in East Leuser, Rawa Singkil and West Leuser in Aceh, while a small number of Sumatran orangutan was found in Batang Toru forests in North Sumatra.

Rosek said Aceh and North Sumatra played a crucial role in the conservation of orangutan. Unfortunately, he said, the provinces local authorities were unable to ensure the survival of the endangered species.

"We are concerned about the attitude of the local authorities. They seem not aware about the current state of the orangutan population, "said Rosek during the hour-long peaceful rally, which took place in the majestic roundabout in Medan.(nai/ebf)
