State-owned electricity company PT PLN has applied rolling blackout in both South and West Sulawesi provinces following the explosion of a transformer in the Tello steam power plant in Makasar on Wednesday.

Mohammad Yamin Loleh, PLN spokesman for the South, West and South East Sulawesi (Sultanbatara) area, said on Friday that the blackout would be applied once or twice a day. Each blackout period would last for two hours.

Since the explosion of the transformer, PLN can only deliver 491 Megawatts (MW), lower than its normal capacity of 630 MW which the two provinces need.

Yamin said that the rolling blackout could last until the weekend. (cor)
